Cheap and cheerful

Premier Inn is 10 minutes’ walk and offers basic comforts at unbeatable prices (from £50)

The Shandon House Hotel is 5 minutes’ walk and tries to beat Premier Inn’s prices by not being a chain but being as every bit as clean and comfortable.

Interesting mid-range

The Red Cow is a comfortable guest house over a lively pub. If you’re bored of watching research groups you can chat to some interesting locals in the bar. 10 mins walk, £100-150

The Richmond Inn Hotel is probably more mid-range than interesting. More business-like and hotel-like than the Red Cow, 5 mins walk, £75-£100

Feeling flush?

The Orange Tree is a boutique hotel over the popular gastropub and theatre of the same name and is right next door to So What?, £150-£200

The Bingham is a boutique hotel/restaurant with rooms in a beautiful location overlooking the river, over the road from Mick Jagger’s house. 20 mins walk, £150+

The Petersham Hotel makes a good stab at being a country house hotel, at the top of Richmond Hill with stunning views over the river and meadows. 25 mins walk, £100+
